***CIF Division Finals - Yet again we show our power***

Saturday saw our athletes once again at Mt SAC stadium, this time for the Division Finals, the meeting of all the top athletes from the whole of Southern California. From here the top 9 in each event, 12 for the 800M, 1600M and 3200M move on to the Masters meet this coming Friday at Cerittos College where the top 5 finishers head North for the California State Finals. The Foothill League was very well represented, once again showing how strong this area is for athletics, all our 6 SCV schools were present in force.

Going through for us are:

Ashley Welker - 800M

Nick Bultman - Shot (New PR and 42nd New School Record)

Also going through for the Foothill League:

Hart - White and O'Neil

Canyon - Thomas and Stone

Saugus - Frankian

Valencia - Gingrich

Hart are the strongest team represented since White qualified in 2 events, however we tie for 2nd strongest along with Canyon.

The Wildcat team has a lot to be proud of this year, 42 New School Records and as strong a showing at major events as any school in the valley.

Well Done Team, Brilliant !!!

Go Wildcats !!!!

***CIF PreLims-another great showing by WR***

Saturday 12th May saw a large number of our athletes head, via an obsure route, to Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo for the first step on the route to State Finals. This meet was the PreLims for Souther Section for Division 1 schools with the next round being at Mt SAC Saturday 19th May.

As usual all our athletes competed ferociously and none were out of place amongst some of the strongest and biggest teams in Southern California. Our athletes deserved to be in this level of competiton which is just another reflection of how well the team has performed this year.

Advancing through to the next level are:

Ashley Welker - 800M

Xiomara Perkins - 400M

Nick Bultman - Shot (New School Record)

Nick Bultman - Discus

Girls 4 x 400M

Xiomara also broke her own 200M School Record, this with Nick's new shot record takes the total to 41 records for the season.

What a day for the Wildcats of West Ranch !!!!

***How tough is the foothill league?***

Here are some interesting facts just published by Dyestat. Each year Dyestat evaluates all of the League results around the whole of Southern California and documents the number of what they clasify as elite marks per league final.
This is a very accountable way to evaluate how tough our Foothill League is in comparison to all of Southern California. There are 94 individual leagues in the Southern Section and of those the top scoring league for elite marks with a score of 86 is the Mojave League featuring schools like Great Oak. In second place with 82 is the South Coast league with schools such as Trabuco Hills and Dana Hills, 3rd spot with a score of 79 goes to Mission League with the powerhouse schools of Harvard Westlake, Loyola and Chaminade.

So, guess who is next with an Elite Mark score of 78, yes Foothill League. That shows what our athletes are up against and still, we have more traveling to CIF PreLims Saturday than ever before.....

***League Finals Resuts***

What an evening of racing !!!

This year has seen the West Ranch team mature into a fighting force in many events. In the past our Wildcat team has been, let's say spotty, with some powerful individuals but no depth. This year the team has become a much more rounded force which is demonstrated by our results from League Finals where we are medaling all over the place not just in one or two events.

To date, this has almost certainly been one of the most successful seasons in the school's history. We have, as a team, set 39 school records including 4 new ones last night at the finals. Let us not forget, getting into finals in this league is no easy feat given that all the other teams are reknown powerhouses in their own right so making a final is an accomplishment on it's own.

To Start...

Our Junior teams did great with the following medaling:

Max Masur 2nd Boys Fresh/Soph 100

Marisa Magsarili 2nd Girls JV 800M

Alex Rassool 3rd Boys Fresh/Soph 400M

2nd Boys Fresh/Soph 4 x 100M

Girls JV 4 x 400M set a new school record finishing 4th.

This is in addition to those that also medaled on Tuesday when there were straight field and 3200M finals.

In past years we have had maybe 5 or 6 athletes go from League Finals onto the big CIF stage, this year, just take a look at this list of qualifiers....

Chu Oguejiofor - Boys 400M

Pierce Miller - Boys 800M (New School Record)

Dirk Braxton - Boys Long Jump

Dirk Braxton - Boys Triple Jump

Nick Bultman - Boys Discus

Nick Bultman - Boys Shot

Nick Gastaldo - Boys Shot

Boys 4 x100M Relay Team

Boys 4 x 400M Relay Team

Xiomara Perkins - Girls 200M (New School Record)

Xiomara Perkins - Girls 400M

Ashley Welker - Girls 800M

Taylor Melsor - Girls High Jump (Also 2 x 4th places)

Girls 4 x 400M Relay Team (New School Record)

Maddison Moore finished 3rd in Girls Shot but didn't make the entry mark.

Every athlete that competed has the right to be proud, they went against some of the best that Southern California has to offer. Not only should the athletes be proud but so should this amazing coaching team !!!

Go Wildcats !!!

***Last Day of Class/Regular Practice***

After what has already been an enormously successful season we will be dismissing the general class on Monday 7th May at 3:15pm. I want everyone, all athletes, to be present as the only other time we will be together is at the banquet the following week.

This year has seen the team be more successful than ever, and as important, it has grown so much as a team in terms of passion, determination, respect and team spirit.

We have fought and competed with syle and class, I want the team to part in the same way.
This will be a formal dismission of the class and only those in attendance will be allowed to consider the class ended.

Now let's go kick butt at League PreLims Tuesday !!!

***UCLA Training Camps***

This summer UCLA are hosting an array of specialty training camps for High School athletes. There are 6 categories of disciplines, Sprints and Hurdles, Jumps featuring Olympian Willie Banks, Mid Distance and Cross Country featuring Olympian Johhny Gray, Pole Vault and Throws.
Dates range from July 8th to August 16th with some disciplines having several courses and dates.

I would strongly recommend all take a look and consider attending to get some really good advice and tips.

Track Meet Information !!!

Our very busy competition season commences Saturday 3rd March with a full team trip to the Don Green Memorial meet in Moorpark.

A few basic tips to ensure we all enjoy the experience:

1) These are very long days, often leaving around 6.15 am and not returning until 6:30 pm or later. We are often late because of the number of medals we win that have to be collected. Bring plenty of food, drink and clothes.

2) We will try to notify athletes one week in advance of those competing.

3) If athletes are being collected from the meet and not taking the bus home I need to be notified no later than 3 days before the event. This allows us to cancel a return bus and save a lot of money.

4) For our local league meets no return bus is provided.

5) Full track meet schedule available under "schedules" and "meets" including link to printable .pdf.

6) Meet information and driving directons will be posted under forthcoming events, just hit the meet date to link to the information.

Twitter update !!!

This morning we had bad weather and our communication system could have been better. Check with your coach about an event twitter account as we are going to try having seperate ones for each event group as well as the overall @westranchtrack account. The overall account will be used for notices that affect the majority of athletes.

CIF Rules and Regulations !!!
It is probably worth reminding you parents of some of the CIF guidelines that govern all sports in California.
1) Athletes must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be allowed to compete.
2) Other than during the specified sport season, athletes are only allowed to be coached for 10 hrs per week.
3) There can be no contact between coaches and athletes on Sundays, this includes email, text etc.
4) Each sport has to specify a 3 week "dead" period between June 9th and August 19th when athletes will be rested.
5) There are also strict rules on college contact with athletes based upon age.
The rules are in place to protect the athlete.

The Importance of a cool down !!!
Too many athletes fail to understand the importance of a cool down.
The cool down after strenuous exercise is there to:
  1. Initiate the breakdown of waste products such as lactic acid
  2. Initiate repair of muscle cells
  3. Reoxygenate muscle tissue depleted by exercise
  4. Initiate muscle adaption
  5. Return the muscles to a relaxed state

A cool down should be 10 to 20 mins and can incorporate static stretching.
